Why does this stunt by Muslims to discredit 'Christians' not surprise me:

And why does this threatening letter from Muslim leaders to Christian leaders also not surprise me?

It's called 'crying wolf'.
The Christian world has bent over backwards to accommodate Islam and Muslim society in every way, not least in Britain. And yet it is just not good enough for them.
Can you imagine any other religion sending such a threatening letter to Christians? How about from Hindus, Buddhists, Sikhs or Jews for starters?
And of course, by suggesting that Muslims and Christians have loads in common, they are excluding the Jewish religion from which they are both hewn (yes, I know sometimes it's difficult to believe it, but it's true, nevertheless).
It reminds me of the dialogue I was supposed to have had in winter 2005 with a 'leading' Muslim woman in Manchester, the very first of its kind, organised by the Royal Society of Arts, no less. I was to talk about an important, but accessible, kabbalistic book that I was in the midst of translating, and she was to talk about her work as a doctor in Altrincham.
What happened exactly?
She issued a 10-minute rant about the fact that 7/7 was the fault of the Christian society of Britain for not allowing more Muslim schools - the perpetrators having gone to ordinary state comprehensives, apparently. So it was 'secular' education that was to blame for their murderous instincts, whilst a good 'Muslim' education would have prevented it!
Follow that, as they say.
Faced by this, I resorted to a couple of Jewish jokes and told a true story about repentance at Yom Kippur. My neighbour's son had phoned the week earlier to apologize for stealing our binoculars years before. Would I ever forgive him, he asked?
I sighed with relief. At last, my husband would stop asking me where I had put them.
'Of course', I said! 'You've saved my bacon' (maybe not appropriate language, but you know what I mean)
No sharia law for him, then!
